What’s up everyone!?! This week I wanted to share with you my thoughts on a particular question that many Christians are asked. If I’ve heard this question once I’ve heard it a million times…especially since becoming ordained. People quite often come up to me and ask “What’s your calling?” Lately, I’ve really started to think this through and find it interesting when people ask this question. I mean, let’s face it…if you’re a Christian…doesn’t everyone have the same calling? If we get right to the point …Jesus called us all to do the same thing, right? Go out into the world and spread the Gospel! The real question here should not be what is your calling, but how is your calling. What gifts did God give you to carry out the same calling every Christian is the world has? Whether that calling is sharing your testimony with others, preaching, singing in the choir, performing with the dance or praise team, teaching Sunday school, helping with the less fortunate, being an usher, deacon, driving the church bus, a greeter, feeding the hungry, helping the homeless or simply sharing the Gospel in a way that is Christ-like so others can experience God’s unconditional love.
You see, I believe, at the moment of salvation a new Christian has a new purpose…a purpose to share God’s love and His Word in some form or fashion. Like I mentioned above, these can be a multitude of things and not limited to what I’ve already mentioned. I truly could make the list go on forever. All Christians are called to be God’s shining light in an age of darkness and sin. You see we all have a calling and the question what’s your calling is really irrelevant.
Let’s not forget Matthew 28:19-20 which says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Look, there are so many who need to see our light shining brightly….our families, friends, coworkers, classmates, or even a stranger on the street. By shining your light, it could make all the difference in someone accepting or denying Christ. I often say, especially in a few of my sermons, that if you knew the cure for cancer wouldn’t you want to share it?? Well my friends, as Christians, we know the cure not only for cancer but for the source of eternal happiness.
What you have to understand is that it’s okay not to be called to lead a large ministry, or to preach or teach Sunday school. Whatever your calling is God has deemed it important…no matter how big or how small!!!! What does matter is that you express yourself in a Christ-like manner…one that lets your light shine as bright as a beacon from a light house; showing the world what true love looks like. It’s a light that can guide lost souls to shore. Never forget Matthew 28:19-20 because God has given you a calling and that calling is to share the Gospel with, what we like to refer to as “pre-Christians.”
Don’t let the opportunity to use your calling (because you do have one) slip past you! It could mean the difference for someone to have a happy, loving eternity spent in Heaven or eternity spent in Hell with weeping and gnashing of teeth. So…the next time you have the opportunity to ask someone what’s their calling…stop and think they already have a calling and ask how’s your calling instead. Who knows you just might light their candle; so they say…”Hey you’re right I do have a calling!!!!”
Be blessed and always be a blessing
